PIMA Group premiers a new performance work entitled Broken Wings, a solo dance performance choreographed and performed by Melisa Putz, set to live piano accompaniment composed and performed by Thomas Clark. As longtime collaborators, Putz and Clark have been experimenting with dance and music performances for over fifteen years.
In the story of Broken Wings, a bird whose wings are broken has a dream of flying as she reverses the Sky and Earth, she is caught up in the swirling ‘Waltz of the Broken Dream’, sings the ancient songs of the ‘Heartwood’, and takes a daring leap. Broken Wings is inspired by the rich tradition of fables that tells the story of animals given human-like qualities and seek to pass on the message of a moral. Inspiration is also drawn from nursery rhymes, many of which speak of morbid connections to historical events, such as ring around the rosie and its telling of deaths during The Plague.
Nicole Bindler premieres two dances: I Think Not, choreographed by Deborah Hay, adapted and performed by Bindler & Pia Mater, a large group work, including a cast of 20 performers, with set design by Ana Hernandez.
I Think Not, Choreographed by Judson era luminary Deborah Hay, adapted and performed by Nicole Bindler, is an intimate solo performed in the round. The dance was taught to Bindler in Findhorn Scotland in 2011 as a part of Hay’s Solo Performance Commissioning Project where 20 international dance artists were coached by Hay on their performance of the dance for 10 days. Bindler committed to practicing the performance of the dance daily for three months before performing it. Through the daily practice the dance has been adapted by Bindler and has become infused with her own choices and aesthetics. The immersion and rigor of this practice has yielded a fully realized and deeply researched dance.
Pia Mater, Latin for tender mother, is the anatomical name for the innermost layer of connective tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Pia Mater is inspired by both the anatomical image and the idea of a tender mother. There are images of cradling and movement inspired by the embodiment of the cerebral spinal fluid. There is also spacious, dynamic dancing by the cast of 18 dancers and a finale called "The Nightmare Bar Mitvah" that draws from memories of Bindler's profound social anxiety in the 7th grade that left her mute. Five musician / composers perform live original music on traditional and newly invented instruments. The musicians perform alongside the dancers and their presence is felt as a part of the choreography. Pia Mater contains moments of sublime beauty and also moments of extreme awkwardness.
